Living with an Ostomy
Mark Clark, 55, Austin, TX
In 1990, I was injured in a motor vehicle accident and became a paraplegic. Then, in the summer of 2016, I had ostomy surgery.
When I left the hospital, I was given a one-piece ostomy system. Everyone at that hospital was given the same products and the same training on how to measure the stoma and how to apply the system. But everybody is so different. Some people are overweight, some are skinny, some have scar tissue. Just having one product for all patients to use and train on is not ideal.
I tried several brands and types of pouching systems after that, but I was not impressed until I tried the B. Braun Flexima® 3S 2-piece system. The system works great for me because it is so lightweight and I am able to easily apply the base plate and bags. I am happy with the convenience and assurance of having the guiding tabs. I also have peace of mind knowing that my skin will stay healthy.
Being a paraplegic is a full-time job, and I was scared for my quality of life when I had the colostomy. But the B. Braun products have made my lifestyle easier. When I wake up in the morning, I don’t have to worry about my bag being an issue. It’s on. It’s not bloated because the filter properly works, and it hasn’t slipped. I don’t have to burp my bag. I don’t have to worry about the smell, and the system works well in the shower. The Flexima 3S gives me the freedom that I never expected to have again.
